Climbing parks with children - what works at what age?

The most common question before a first visit: is my child allowed up there? There is no single answer, because operators measure differently.

Age or height?

Two systems are common:

• By age. Abenteuerpark Gröbming and Kletterwald Hornpark start at three, Waldseilpark Tscheppaschlucht at five, Kletterpark Goldberg at six.
• By height. Waldseilpark Pyramidenkogel drops the age limit entirely thanks to a continuous safety-line system and only asks for 120 cm. Waldseilpark Golm also works with 120 cm, while Kletterpark Schöckl grades by course: 100 cm for green and blue, 130 cm for red, 140 cm for black.

The reason for the height rule is practical: the child has to operate the safety system, or at least hang safely from the steel cables, and has to reach from platform to platform.

The accompaniment rule

Almost everywhere, an adult climbs along with children under 14. The ratio matters - many sites cap it at three children per adult. Climbing along means climbing along: if you are afraid of heights yourself, it helps nobody to find out halfway across.

What works for the smallest

A few sites have ground-level courses for pre-schoolers. At Kletterpark Schlossberg Lienz children climb from the age of two, Gerlos has 15 dedicated kids' lines and a junior course from 105 cm. Abenteuerpark Achensee drops all limits as long as an adult climbs along.

Practical tips for a first visit

1. Call ahead or read the operator's site. Age limits change when courses are rebuilt.
2. Allow plenty of time. A children's course rarely takes under an hour.
3. Sturdy shoes, long hair tied back. Gloves are often available to rent.
4. Do not overdo it. The first blue course decides whether it is fun.
5. Check the weather. Every site is cleared during a thunderstorm.
