Seilpark Bern: climbing in the Dählhölzli forest, ten minutes from the station

Seven courses up to 23 metres high in the middle of the city, plus three kids' courses and a 30-metre jump. Seilpark Bern opened its whole photo folder to us.

Yaëlle Zahnd from Seilpark Bern did not send us a few pictures – she sent a whole folder and told us to "choose freely". We picked five, and the entry now shows the forest instead of the neutral drawing. Thank you very much!

A rope park you can reach by tram

The cover photo shows the orange "Seil Park Bern" sign beneath a bridge of wooden rungs, with someone balancing across above it. The park sits at the edge of the Dählhölzli forest by Thunplatz, about ten minutes from the main station by tram 7 or 8 or buses 19 and 28. The way there is not signposted – for the satnav the address is Thunplatz 17.

Seven courses, 120 platforms

The photos show how varied the routes are: a sloping aluminium ladder bridge, a long zip line between the trees, swaying wooden walkways and platforms built around the trunks. Seven self-belay courses at 4 to 23 metres lead across around 120 platforms. Children aged four to nine have three courses of their own with a continuous belay, and anyone brave enough can take the Powerfan jump from 30 metres.

Theory first, then the forest

Before tackling courses 1 to 7 you watch the instruction video once a season, pass the theory test – which can also be done online – and complete the practice course. Nobody climbs alone; you are always at least two.

Adults pay CHF 42 for up to four hours, children under 16 CHF 32. On your birthday entry is free. The season runs until mid-November, in autumn on Wednesdays and at weekends.

You will find more facilities in the area under Bern.
