"Kletterwald Bretten and Illingen: two parks, one combination ticket"

Bretten in the Kraichgau and Illingen in the Enzkreis belong to the same operator, less than twenty kilometres apart. What the two share, where they differ - and who the combination ticket is for.

Two climbing forests in Baden-Württemberg, run by the same company: managing director Stephan Coenen operates Kletterwald Bretten in the Kraichgau and Kletterwald Illingen in the Enzkreis, less than twenty kilometres to the west. Know one and you will find your way around the other quickly - the differences are in the access rules and the programme.

What both share

Three and a half hours of climbing time. Both sites give more time than the three hours that are the standard elsewhere in the directory.

One combination ticket for both parks. 44 € for adults, 42 € reduced and 40 € for children - valid at Bretten and at Illingen. That saves noticeably against two separate tickets, and the courses differ enough that the second visit does not feel like a repeat.

Leather gloves are mandatory. Bring your own or pay 4.50 € a pair on site. Both locations take cash only, and the season runs from late March to early November.

Where the two differ

Bretten has the kids' course. From age three, around 50 exercises, two hours. The high courses, with around 120 exercises, start at age seven and about 1.25 m in height with an adult, and from 1.40 m alone. Individual prices: 27 € for adults, 25 € for students and apprentices from 16, 23 € for children 7 to 15, 17 € for the kids' course.

Illingen only starts from age seven - there is no separate course for younger children here. Instead, Illingen offers moonlight climbing for 35 €, booking required: if you want to climb after dark, this is the place, but you cannot just turn up. Individual prices: 26 € for adults, 24 € for students and apprentices, 22 € for children. Groups of ten or more pay 2 € less throughout, and one teacher climbs free per ten paying pupils.

Which one for whom

With children aged three to six, Bretten is the only option - the kids' course exists there alone.

For an adventure after sunset, Illingen is the address: moonlight climbing does not exist at the other site.

If you want to visit both, in the same holiday or over a season, the combination ticket beats two separate tickets.

A word on the photos

The pictures in both entries come from Stephan Coenen himself - as with every operator enquiry, we had asked for photos in exchange for crediting the source and linking back to the operator's own site. Both sit under every gallery.

Of 375 facilities in this directory, ten now show photos of their own; the rest show a neutral drawing. Better no picture than someone else's.

All details from the operator's own pages, checked in August 2026.
