What makes Hochseilgarten Schloss Retzhof special

The ropes course belongs to the Schloss Retzhof education centre in Wagna and is aimed at schools, youth groups and clubs – programmes are cut to the group, and there is no ticket desk.

One thing to plan around: climbing is by advance booking only, and only from 10 people upwards. Turning up on the day, or arriving as a pair, will not get you on the course – the enquiry beforehand is not a formality but the only way in.

Twenty-eight stations spread across various heights and grades, joined by a flying fox and a viewing platform 18 metres up. Elements just above the ground round it off: a slackline plus a spine and foot course.

What is remarkable here, though, is the accessibility. The Retzhof holds the European Accessibility Award, and its adventure stations from archery to the ropes course can be used by people with disabilities too. Among the 350 sites in this directory that is a rarity – the vast majority of climbing parks quietly assume you can climb a ladder and move your own carabiners.

The courses in detail

The site is built at several heights, so a group is not pinned to one level as a whole. Anyone feeling uneasy stays low without having to abandon the afternoon.

The practice course at the entry is not a formality. The belay technique is shown and rehearsed there before anyone goes up – the briefing is part of every programme.

The high stations are spread across the trees around the castle park, joined by ladders and platforms. The platform at 18 metres is the highest point and, for many groups, the real goal: the point is not to complete every station but to stand up there once.

Ground-level elements – slackline, spine and foot course – extend the programme downwards. They are the part that still works with a group in which not everyone wants to or can climb.

Getting there

The Retzhof stands at Dorfstraße 17 in 8435 Wagna, south of Leibnitz in southern Styria. From Graz it is about 40 kilometres on the A9 towards Spielfeld, exit Leibnitz.

By train Leibnitz is roughly 25 minutes from Graz; from the station it is a few minutes by bus or taxi. For school classes from the Graz area the site is therefore reachable without hiring a coach – rare among ropes courses, since most sit in woodland far from any stop.

The castle itself is an education centre with seminar rooms and beds. Multi-day programmes can be run on one site without moving the group in the evening.

For groups

You book a programme, not an admission. In practice that means:

• Advance booking is required and the minimum is 10 people. The education centre cannot put smaller groups on the course.
• The duration follows the group, not a climbing time printed on a ticket.
• Instructors stay with you, not just for the briefing.
• The emphasis is yours to choose – from a sporting afternoon to an adventure-education programme with reflection.
• Inclusive groups are expressly provided for. Anyone needing assistance should say so when enquiring, so that the right equipment and enough staff are ready.

The operator publishes no prices, because they depend on group size, duration and programme. Enquiries go through the education centre.
