What makes Kletterwald Freischütz special

The courses are named after mountain ranges, and that is not decoration: the higher the range in reality, the higher and harder the course in the forest. The Erzgebirge stays at four metres and nine elements, the Pyrenees at five, the Eiger Express reaches eight — and at the top stands the Himalaya. If you come with children, you can read the difficulty off the name without studying a colour chart.

Twelve courses with 120 climbing elements reach up to twelve metres. On top of that there is a special element on a knotted rope going up to 15 metres.

The courses connect to each other. Near the zipline at the end of one course you find the entry to the next — so you can work through them in order without walking back to base camp each time. A map flyer is available at the desk.

There is head-torch climbing. Through the trees after dark, with light reaching only as far as the lamp does — a format few sites offer. There are also a GPS treasure hunt, Halloween dates and the option to book the forest exclusively.

Reserve a slot in advance. The operator states plainly that this is the only way to be sure harnesses are available. During the summer holidays it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm.
