What makes the ropes course at the ÖAV centre in Mauthen special

The site belongs to the Alpine Club's youth training centre South in the mountaineering village of Mauthen – so it is not an afternoon excursion but part of a site where groups stay for days.

There are high ropes courses for children and for adults, plus a 28-metre climbing tower the Alpine Club calls the "Alpine martyr's pole", and a second one of seven metres – in winter it becomes an ice climbing tower. Climbing gardens, a practice via ferrata, tunnels, gorges, beach volleyball courts and a natural swimming pool right next to the camp complete it.

Accommodation is in two heatable dormitories for 26 people in total or on the tent meadow; tents are lent out if needed. Climbing equipment can be borrowed too.

The intended audience is clear: school classes, youth groups and families, not individual visitors at a ticket desk. Programmes are supervised by youth leaders and mountain guides; the Mauthner Klamm via ferrata has a minimum age of ten.

It operates from May to October and from December to March – one of the few sites in the directory open in winter as well. The Obergailtal-Lesachtal section gives prices on request.
